![]() Maybe she's aiming for metaphorical, magic surrealism, but sometimes I really think she's kind of batty. My faith in the narrative wavered early on when she discussed having religious visions on her period, as if the saints were battling for dominion over her ladyparts. But sometimes it comes off as mannered and can get monotonous. It reads very quickly, and she sometimes succeeds at creating a very visceral effect. I did at times like her writing- it's very, very vivid and I don't normally like the choppy-fragment sentence style usually, but here it often works. I avoided her in the 80s mostly, and have seen/heard some things that were impressive and others that were god-awful, but on the other hand, some very talented people can churn out crap, too. ![]() I want to believe in her goal and persona as a person who has been through hell and worked their way to the other side, but like someone else here said, my BS alarms went off occasionally. Lunch is aiming for Magic Realism in some of the 'paranormal' passages, or perhaps she's just batty and full of it. (I wrote a much more in depth review that seems to have evaporated but I will try again). ![]()
